$50 for a single cantaloupe

Almost a year ago to the day I wrote THIS about Urban Fare's $200 watermelons they had available, followed up by THIS about their "poor man's watermelons" that they also brought in.

From time to time they present a product like this which seems mostly about generating a buzz and less about serving an actual customer need, but I appreciate the creative effort they put in to getting people talking about them. Also I feel like maybe, just maybe, there are .001% of our readers who have a ridiculous amount of money lying around who might find this interesting and buy one just to see what it's all about.

So. If you're in the market for a ridiculously overpriced cantaloupe, Urban Fare now has Crown Melon Shizuoaka available for $49.99 each. Apparently these imports from Japan are known as the "King of Fruit", and only one of them is produced per tree. They're supposed to be really sweet, but .

When you're a king, they display you in glass on a pedestal at the grocery store.

Also available right now are mandarin oranges for $9.99 a pound, or $99.99 per box. Not quite the king of citrus, but not easy to get in the summer months. Open fires are banned throughout all of BC due the the drought but there's no ban on burning money, so have at 'er! ;)
