Historic German restaurant in Vancouver closes due to redevelopment

"Thank you everyone for making us such an institution in Vancouver"

It's more of a "See you in a bit" than a "Goodbye forever" from the folks at the Deutsches Haus Restaurant.

The historic restaurant was founded and run by the Vancouver Alpen Club; for decades it has been the site of many traditional meals and events at the club's building. As that building is being redeveloped, the restaurant has closed its doors as of Sunday, July 24, which the club announced "with great sadness" last week.

"But it gives us great joy to announce a rebirth in 2025 that will continue all the traditions and culture of the past 85 years," the club says on its website.

The club's new building will be a six-storey mixed-use structure with residential space on the upper floors and commercial space (including the new restaurant) at street level.

"Thank you everyone for making us such an institution in Vancouver and all your support over the years, we will miss you but look forward to seeing you in our new home at the same location," says the Alpen Club on their website.
