Vancouver's iconic Ovaltine Cafe is reopening after being shut down by a fire in May 2023.

One of Vancouver's most historic diners is coming back.

After being shut down for more than six months due to a devastating fire, the Ovaltine Cafe in the Downtown Eastside has announced it will reopen later this week.

"Good news, friends!" states the cafe on social media. "We are finally reopening our door this Friday, Dec 15. Come by to say hi 8 a.m. to 3 p.m."

The cafe is a local icon. Opened up in 1942, it has shown up in TV shows like Supernatural and the X-Files and was even named to a list of the "Top 50 Cafes on Earth."

On May 29, 2023, a fire broke out behind the building at 251 E Hastings St. which badly damaged the structure.

"This morning we had an arson fire in the back of the restaurant and it resulted in fire and smoke damage throughout the whole place," described operators at the time.

A fundraising campaign was launched a couple of days after to make sure the diner could be repaired; over the last six months; nearly $20,000 has been raised.
