Metro Vancouver brewery restaurant shuts down suddenly after 23 years of beers

It's the second brewpub in the region to close up in the last few weeks.

Big Ridge Brewing in Surrey has ceased operations according to the Mark James Group.

Just a couple of weeks after Green Leaf Brewing shut down in North Vancouver, another longstanding brewpub restaurant in the region has closed up shop.

Big Ridge Brewing Co. in Surrey was one of the older craft breweries in the region, having opened in 1999 before the current boom in the industry.

Located in South Newton, the brewpub restaurant was one of the Mark James Group's outposts, which is also behind Yaletown Brewing in Vancouver, High Mountain Brewing Co. in Whistler, and the Flying Beaver Bar and Grill in Richmond.

In a poster taped to the front door of the brewery, the company announced Big Ridge had ceased operations as of Sept. 12. The related liquor store in the same strip mall was also closed.

"We thank you for your patronage as we close this chapter," reads the poster.

The brewery's Facebook and Instagram accounts have been deleted, and the brewery's page on the company's website is essentially empty with links to the other breweries, as well as the company's distilling companies.

Anyone with gift certificates to the brewery can redeem them at another Mark James Group location.
