A small, casual award-winning restaurant known mostly for their homestyle Mexican fare has closed abruptly.

Molli Cafe, on Burrard near Davie in downtown Vancouver, has been reported closed on Yelp. While the restaurant does have social media pages, their Instagram and Facebook accounts have not been updated in several months.

A phone call to Molli Cafe Monday afternoon, during what were supposed to be business hours, rang without ever being answered.

The casual counter-service spot served up Mexican dishes like tacos and tortas (sandwiches), as well as breakfast plates, pastries, and soups. They were beloved for their lamb dishes that had at times been only available on weekend, and were at one point certainly worth waiting for Saturday to come around.

In April 2019, Molli took top honours with a number one finish in the Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards' Best Latin category. At the time, the owners indicated they were struggling to stay open, particularly given their location on a section of Burrard that is hard to access.

In September 2019, Molli was taken over by new owners of Persian descent, who sprinkled the cafe's offerings to reflect eats of their own culinary heritage.

It is unclear if the closure at this time is temporary or permanent, or if, perhaps, the current owners are reworking the business concept. We'll update if and when more info becomes available.
