"Everyone is treated like a friend here," says the owner.

Aureliana is a new retro-inspired diner with all-day breakfast, burgers, and vintage vibes, opening soon in Gastown.

When you're grabbing a bite at the local diner, you're likely not in for a long wait.

Unfortunately, that's not always how it goes when you're trying to get a new diner open for business in Vancouver, which first-time restaurateur Akam Bains knows firsthand.

Bains is behind Aureliana, a forthcoming Gastown retro-inspired diner that V.I.A. first reported on back in August 2024. The owner-operator says he has been in kitchens all his life, and in the industry for over a decade, starting as a dishwasher to now finding himself opening his own restaurant.

Now, after lengthy construction delays and with opening day on the horizon (though an exact date has not been set) Bains has offered a bit more insight into what diners can expect at Aureliana.

Vintage vibes are on order, that's for sure, thanks in part to the decor of the former El Furniture Warehouse space at 156 W Hastings St, which includes "exposed brick, chrome accents, leather seating, floral touches and neon lights," Bains shares by email.

"You're stepping into a feeling of nostalgia, warmth and a bit of a movie!" he describes.

Aureliana will be open for breakfast through early evenings for dinner, and Bains says the plan is to extend the hours to late night eventually.

The menu will be concise, with all-day breakfast selections and a roster of reliable burgers among other diner-style offerings, like deli sandwiches, hand-cut fries, and a selection of desserts.

"Simplicity and using high quality ingredients to elevate every dish is our main focus," explains Bains. "We use fresh, organic product from local farms."

Set up as an open kitchen concept with counter service, Aureliana's guests can opt to "enjoy the full dine-in experience, grab a cup of coffee or order ahead for takeout."

And everyone is welcome, adds Bains. "Come as you are!"

Community is at the core of what Aureliana will be about, and what Bains hopes to achieve.

"My ultimate end goal for this concept is to become a neighbourhood staple," says Bains.

"I want to cook for the people, create a welcoming environment and build strong relationships. Everyone is treated like a friend here. We have a very close-knit team with great attention to detail and we're excited to meet everyone."

Though the build-out process for Aureliana has seen some setbacks, progress has been made and Bains says he hopes to welcome guests to the new retro-inspired diner in August.
