Watch: Level up at Vancouver's new Southeast Asian-inspired burger joint

You'll find a Big Mac-style burger with Shrimp Toast as the middle "bun," ube and mango milkshakes, and "Dirty" fries at this brand new spot

Vancouver's smashburger game is strong, but a new challenger has entered the arena.

Street Hawker is set to welcome food fans to check out a tight menu of stacked burgers, epic fried chicken sandwiches, loaded fries, and creamy shakes, all with bold, punchy next-level Southeast Asian flavours.

The sibling spot to Cambie's Potluck Hawker will soft launch Friday, May 19 (and grand open Saturday, May 27) at 3088 Main St, in the space vacated by Planetary Burger.

Chef Justin Cheung and his team made short work of the space, infusing the two-level casual, modern space with neon retro gamer vibes (check out the custom wallpaper in the washroom and the giant logo mural).

Street Hawker: What's on the menu

The menu is simple: Get a single, double, or triple smashburger in a couple of iterations, from the basic Pickle Smash, with caramelized onions and pickled mustard greens, to the fiery Krapow Attack, with black pepper sauce, long beans, and crispy basil.

A specialty burger option is a riff on a Big Mac, complete with secret sauce, shredded lettuce, a pair of patties, and sesame-studded bun - but that bonus middle bun layer is subbed in with a golden-fried and juicy wedge of shrimp toast. A vegan burger option, the Sonic Shroom, is also on the menu.

In the fried chicken sandwich category, there's the milder Egg Yolk Flame (Aburi salted egg yolk cheese, pickled mustard greens, and pickled red onions) and the spicy General Tao Crusher (extra hot mala caramel, sesame, salted cucumber, pickled mustard greens, and fresh herbs).

Fries come "basic" or done "Dirty" with cheese sauce, chili sauce, pickled mustard stem, pork floss, and herbs - you'll need a fork for these for sure.

To wash it all down - and especially to cool the heat from Street Hawker's spicier dishes - they're making shakes in flavours like ube, mango, and Milo, a beloved chocolate malt drink.
