Popular sourdough-centric microbakery opening permanent Vancouver shop

"Our little queer microbakery is getting a store front!"

Tall Shadow, a bakery that specializes in sourdough breads, is shifting from a commissary and farmers market stand operation to a permanent East Vancouver bakery storefront this summer.

"We've got some big news to share!" begins Tall Shadow Bakery in its latest Instagram post. "Our little queer microbakery is getting a store front!"

The popular sourdough-focused bakery, which supplies breads to a number of Vancouver restaurants and food trucks, is most typically found by customers at local farmers' markets, but come the summer, the doors will be open at their forthcoming bakeshop location in the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood - "just in time for picnics at Pandora Park," adds the business.

Pandora Park is just a couple of blocks north of where Tall Shadow is setting up shop at 2474 E Hastings St.

The news solidifies what across-the-street neighbours It's Okay Bar hinted at back in January when they opened up - that there is excitement in the area about small local ventures giving locals more reason to shop, dine, and hang out along this section of Hastings Street. And, yes, we definitely were talking about the vacant spot at 2474, which was home most recently to Imposter Cafe & Provisions, and Black Rook Bakehouse before that. The latter was a popular draw for local seniors for coffee and bites pre-pandemic.

The owners of Tall Shadow, which describes itself as "a small bakery that specializes in sourdough bread," say the area is an ideal fit for them. "We are over the moon with excitement to announce that our little business has found a home in the Hastings Sunrise neighborhood of East Vancouver. We've lived in this community for over six years and we are so excited to be opening our bakery here," they write in their Instagram announcement post.

Tall Shadow says there is much work to be done in the space, hence the long timeline out to the planned opening. In the meanwhile, bread fans can get acquainted with their goods by picking up a loaf Friday through Sunday from Mucker Next Door, the shop adjacent to Dachi restaurant on Hastings, or visit their stand at upcoming Vancouver Farmers Market days (Riley Park on Saturdays and Hastings Park on Sundays).

The bakery not only makes sourdough bread loaves, but also pretzels, bagels, and baguettes. They also have coffee, sandwiches, and sweet treats available at their farmers' market stand.
