Shuttered Burnaby diner space reborn with flame-grilled chicken goodness

Peri Peri Shack joins a crowded chicken field

“George likes his chicken spicy.”

That’s a line from George Costanza from Seinfeld and I chose it because George would love The Peri Peri Shack, a company that is adding a new restaurant in Burnaby.

The Peri Peri Shack has three levels of heat, from hot, very hot to Peri Nero – the restaurant’s hottest flavour.

They are bringing this spicy chicken – along with mild, citrus and herb, plus mango – to the corner of Hastings Street and Sperling Avenue to fill the space recently vacated by Cozmos Cafe, which closed after deciding to not renew its lease.

And yes, it’s yet another chicken restaurant opening up in Burnaby. The Peri Peri Shack is packing its flame-grilled chicken and rice dishes – plus barbecued corn -  into a crowded roster of chicken restaurants in the city.

The city has been filled with new restaurants like Popeyes, Chicko, Chirpyhut, Hi-Five and Pelicana.

The latest is bb.q, a company that has more than 3,500 locations in 57 countries, including several already opened in the Tri-Cities area.

The first restaurant is coming to the old Chez Meme bistro spot in Burnaby Heights on Hastings Street, just west of Gilmore. The second will be coming to the Metrotown area on Beresford, which is located a block to the south of Metropolis at Metrotown.

bb.q Chicken USA CEO Hyongbong Kim said in an interview with QSR that “food is the gateway to all culture.”

“The best Korean fried chicken brand, bb.q, came to the U.S. in 2007,” Kim said. “Since, it has established its brand in North America by showing Korean food culture is part of K-Culture.”

bb.q has a menu that takes fried chicken to a different level. There’s the golden original signature crispy version, but there are also several hot and spicy versions, including gang-jeong, Jamaican, mala hot and gangnum style. One item that caught my eye was a cheesling chicken smothered in mascarpone and cheddar cheese powders. There’s also a black pepper chicken, soy garlic and honey and garlic. And you can get wings or other parts of the chicken.

Chicken lovers have a whole new set of decisions to make.
