A man who allegedly hijacked a plane from Victoria International Airport and flew it to Vancouver International Airport on Tuesday, July 15, briefly made a appearance in Richmond Provincial Court on Tuesday morning, July 22, via video link from Surrey Pretrial Services Centre.

Shaheer Cassim is charged with one count of causing a flight to deviate from its flight plan by force or threat and one count of interfering with operations at YVR that could have endangered an aircraft in flight.

Last Tuesday, Cassim allegedly took control of a Victoria Flying School's Cessna 172 on a Victoria airport runway, then allegedly flew it in circles above Vancouver International Airport. Flight arrivals were shut down for about 40 minutes.

Tuesday's hearing was intended to be a bail hearing, but that was put off for a week.

Cassim is scheduled back in court on Tuesday, July 29.
