Canadians urged to stop calling 911 to report U.S. license plates

There's a much better number to call...if you must

It's no secret there's been some tension created by the presence of U.S. license plates in and around Canada during the pandemic, particularly in B.C.

But that's not a good enough reason to call 911, says E-Comm representative Kaila Butler.

Although COVID-19 related calls to both 911 and non-emergency police lines have decreased in volume from previous months, Butler says they must be reserved for genuine situations where people require help.

"A lot of callers are dialing 9-1-1 or the police non-emergency lines to report vehicles with U.S. license plates. We want to urge potential callers to remember that there are many valid reasons a U.S. registered vehicle may be in Canada.

"If someone is still interested in filing a report, they can reach out to the Canada Border Services Agency border watch line at 1-888-502-9060 instead of dialing 9-1-1.”

E-Comm also has a COVID-19 guide listing additional resources on its website
