A North Vancouver man has a hefty bill to pay as well as some explaining to do after getting his mother’s Lamborghini Gallardo impounded by BC Highway Patrol.

The incident happened on June 1 on Highway 3 just outside of Princeton, although police just issued a release about it on Tuesday.

According to Cpl. Michael McLaughlin, officers clocked the man driving the Italian supercar at 130 kilometres per hour in an 80 km/h zone. Speeding above 40 km/h over the limit is an automatic vehicle impound.

“The driver said he was on his way to a racetrack. Had he driven more responsibly, he could have had a great day at the track. Instead, he had an awkward conversation with mom,” McLaughlin said in the release.

The driver was facing an excessive speeding ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act for $368, a $109-ticket for failing to display a front licence plate, the cost of a rural tow and seven-day impound and three years of high-risk driver premiums from ICBC, which McLaughlin said would like total over $2,500.

“Our first priority is to keep you and all road users safe,” he warned. “If that is not enough to slow you down, you may wish to consider whether you’re willing to light thousands of dollars of your own money on fire.”
