Transit police arrested a man with a Glock handgun at Vancouver’s Main Street–Science World SkyTrain Station July 6.

A 42-year-old homeless man faces multiple firearm offences after transit police fare checkers discovered a loaded handgun.

Metro Vancouver Transit Police said the man was arrested about 2 p.m. July 6 at Vancouver’s Main Street–Science World SkyTrain Station.

“As a result, multiple outstanding warrants were discovered, as well as a loaded Glock 23 handgun, ammunition, and what were believed to be controlled substances in his possession,” police said.

Michael James Smith has been charged with numerous offences, including failing to comply with the conditions of his release order. He also faces multiple firearm offences, including possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

“As police officers, we understand that routine everyday activities like fare enforcement can create an opportunity to remove and hold accountable anyone who poses a threat to the feeling of safety of the travelling public,” Sgt. Dustin Szakacs said.

Smith remains in custody.
