An RCMP officer who's worked with the Surrey detachment since 2010 has been criminally charged.

The BC Prosecution Service announced on Wednesday that charges of breach of trust and fraud have been approved against Surrey RCMP Cpl. Peter Leckie.

The alleged incidents took place over a six-year span, between January 2014 and October 2020, and involved three individuals.

"It is alleged Peter Leckie used his position as a police officer to obtain information and contact members of the public for the purpose of engaging in intimate relationships with women both on and off duty,” states an RCMP press release.

Leckie is currently suspended with pay.

"The recent developments with criminal charges laid today will engage the process to move towards suspension without pay," the police statement reads.

Assistant Commissioner Brian Edwards, Officer in Charge of the Surrey RCMP, called the allegations "disturbing."

"Our Professional Standards Unit is committed to a thorough investigation and we urge anyone who may have additional information to reach out to PSU investigators,” says Edwards.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.
