A man charged with sexual assault and indecent exposure has elected a B.C. Supreme Court judge and jury trial.

John Frederick Field has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

A court information filed Feb. 8 alleges Field sexually assaulted a woman on Feb. 11. It further alleges he masturbated in public at Vancouver’s St. Paul’s Hospital.

Field appeared by video in front of Vancouver provincial court Judge John Milne June 7.

Field said he wanted a preliminary hearing on the charge but it was unclear whether that option was available to him.

However, he said, he didn’t want to waste court time.

“I want to proceed with my charge right away so I can clear my name,” Field told Milne.

The Crown prosecutor estimated two days for trial.
