The case of a man accused in a machete attack New Year’s Eve 2021 will appear in court next March for a judge to hear a pre-sentence report.

Cruz Thomas Joseph was initially charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of assault causing bodily harm, robbery, and possession of a dangerous weapon in connection with the attacks. He remains in custody.

He made an appearance in Vancouver provincial court Aug. 22 where the date of March 31 was set.

Prosecutor Daniel Mulligan told B.C. Supreme Court Justice Heather MacNaughton in late March that Crown was “having some resolution discussions” with Joseph’s lawyer Josh Oppal.

Provincial court records show an intended guilty plea in the case for the end of March.

Police said at the time that the attacks appeared completely unprovoked.

The victims were a 52-year-old man who was struck in the head and a 26-year-old man who was hit in the face.

Both incidents took place near Granville and Nelson streets, where police ultimately apprehended Joseph at around 7 p.m. that night.
