Bathtub Races

Bathtubs are usually thought of with water on the inside, but not according to the inspiration of Nanaimo mayor Frank Ney, who instituted the first bathtub races. Hopefuls traversed the course between Nanaimo and Vancouver in all manner of clever, cobbled-together vessels, with this winner, Richard Mellis, roaring in in 1997 with a time of 1:17:17. Now, with the end of Vancouver’s Sea Fest, the race is held entirely within the Nanaimo harbour.
