February 1st marks the beginning of Black History Month in the city of Vancouver, and there have been a couple of features published online that I'd like to draw your attention to so you can learn more about this annual, month-long celebration of the history, contributions, and culture of people of African descent in our city.

Travis Lupick of the Georgia Straight wrote THIS great piece about the kick-off that took place at City Hall yesterday. It offers some insight as to where Black History Month came from, and where to look for more information on events happening throughout the city during.

The second link is to THIS CBC PIECE all about the Canada Post stamps that were released by Canada Post, commemorating Vancouver's Hogan's Alley and Halifax's Africville. In it they speak to local writer and poet, Wayde Compton, and offer insight into this fantastic release which features Fielding Spotts and Nora Hendrix (Jimi's grandmother), former residents of Hogan’s Alley.
