Vancouver police officers issued 34 tickets under 2 hours in the downtown core on Tuesday, March 7, 2023.

Over 30 Vancouver drivers were fined in less than two hours in the downtown core.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Traffic Unit was patrolling the streets alongside volunteers from the Granville Downtown South Community Policing Centre (GDS CPC) on Tuesday, March 7.

Within a short two hours, officers and volunteers issued 34 tickets, "ironically" while stationed in front of The Provincial Court.

VPD Const. Tania Visintin tells V.I.A. that 25 out of the 34 tickets were issued for distracted driving, which translates to a $368 fine for using an electronic device while driving.

"March is distracted driving month, so our officers are out ensuring drivers are keeping their eyes up and paying attention to the road," Visintin adds.

According to a B.C. criminal lawyer, misinformation surrounding the province's cellphone usage while driving law results in officers routinely issuing tickets to drivers for something that is actually legal.

The lawyer clears up what is and isn't legal when it comes to using your phone behind the wheel.
