Argument and altercation led to fatal 'isolated' Coquitlam stabbing, no gang connections

IHIT says this was not a random attack, but it's not clear if the victim and an arrested suspect were known to each other.

No gang-conflict connections, no charges yet and no names at this time.

However, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) does confirm a 29-year-old man was the victim of a fatal stabbing at the back of Glen Elementary in Coquitlam early Sunday morning (May 8) — and the attack was not random.

Spokesperson Sgt. David Lee said the incident started with an argument between the victim and a suspect who has since been arrested, which then led to an altercation.

"We are still looking to determine the extent of it, but info so far is that they were not known to each [other]," he said when asked by the Tri-City News this afternoon (May 9), adding there's no connection to gangs or gang conflict.

"This was an isolated incident and the Glen Elementary community is not at risk."

Lee says the special B.C. police unit is not looking for additional suspects and investigators are still gathering evidence.

RCMP were called to the School District 43 (SD43) institution around 12:40 a.m. on Mother's Day Sunday — located at 3064 Glen Dr., in the Coquitlam City Centre neighbourhood.

According to photos provided to the Tri-City News, the incident appeared to have taken place on the other side of a fence behind the school.

Police tape was also set up in allowing emergency crews to tend to the victim.

IHIT says it's working the case with Coquitlam RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Section and the BC Coroners Service.
