A fire broke out in Vancouver's Chinatown neighbourhood Friday afternoon (Sept. 9).

Firefighters got an alarm around noon for a fire at 218 Keefer St that was inside a 110-year-old four-storey building.

"We have crews inside right now trying to go after it," says Assistant Fire Chief, Dan Nichols, over the phone to Vancouver Is Awesome. "It is a grease fire that got into the roof of a [four] storey building."

Crews worked for about an hour to put the fire out, says Nichols. "We've got 39 displaced residents that we dealt with through emergency social services," he adds.

Residents have heard explosions nearby, however the Vancouver Fire Rescue Services say that they must have happened before crews arrived.

The building suffered extensive water damage, some fire damage as well as some structural damage due to looking for extensions, explains Nichols.

218 Keefer Street is home to a restaurant, Gain Wah, and above that, the Keefer Rooms SRO.
