RCMP are warning parents after a Burnaby toddler fell out of a second-floor window on Wednesday.

Burnaby RCMP say the child fell 20 feet from the window.

“It appears as though the parent was getting their children ready for bed when one of the children aged 3, left the room unnoticed,” said a police statement. “The parent discovered the child moments later on the ground outside the home. Thankfully, the child only suffered minor injuries and is going to be ok."

Today, police are asking that anyone with young children in their home take five minutes to review the advice below and to check every window in your home to make sure they are safe.

"This is every parent's worst nightmare and we want to prevent it from happening again to another family," said Cpl. Mike Kalanj with Burnaby RCMP. "With warmer weather on the way, windows in homes are going to be open throughout the day so please ensure they are secure and that you take every precaution to keep young people in your home safe."

Some tips on keeping your home more secure for young children:

  • Don’t underestimate a child’s mobility; children begin climbing before they can walk.
  • Toddlers may use anything as a step stool to get higher.
  • Window screens will not prevent children from falling through.
  • Install window guards on windows above the ground level.
  • Don’t leave children unattended on balconies or decks.
  • Talk to your children about the dangers of opening and playing near windows, particularly on upper floors of the home.
