Burnaby weekly COVID-19 cases sink as part of provincial trend

As British Columbia continues its decline in new COVID-19 infections, Burnaby is also following suit. 

According to the latest Geographic Distribution of COVID-19 by Local Health Area of Case Residence data, Burnaby recorded 309 new infections from April 25 to May 1.

From April 18 to 24, the city hit 397 cases, which equates to a drop of 88 this week. 

The data is released by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).

Burnaby has now seen more than 200 cases for 11 straight weeks which saw a record number of new infections of 475 from April 4-10. 

As of this publication (May 6), Fraser Health has a recorded total of 76,955 cases, with 4,464 cases currently active.

The BCCDC says 300 people are hospitalized across the region, 87 of which are in critical care or ICU. 

A total of 847 lives have been lost in Fraser Health due to the virus. 

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Minister of Health Adrian Dix are scheduled to give a live briefing this afternoon (May 6) at 1 p.m.
