Caulfeild Safeway reopens after bomb-sniffing dogs check store

Bomb threat reported after staff overheard conversation between customers, police said

Police have determined that there is no safety threat at Caulfeild Village Shopping Centre in West Vancouver after a tip was received earlier Thursday afternoon (June 17) about a possible explosive device inside the Safeway grocery store.

"There is no threat to public safety," said Const. Kevin Goodmurphy, spokesman for the West Vancouver Police Department, after three bomb-sniffing dogs – including one from the RCMP and two from the transit police – checked the store on Thursday afternoon. “All three dogs cleared the store and did not locate anything suspicious,” said Goodmurphy.

Police got a call around noon from staff at the grocery store, saying they had information that there may be a bomb inside the store. Goodmurphy later said he understood that information about the potential “bomb threat” came from a conversation between customers inside the store that was overhead by staff.

West Vancouver police officers blocked off the immediate area and evacuated everyone from the Safeway.

Those measures are now over. The grocery store has been reopened and police have cleared the scene.
