Charge laid in 2018 Vancouver homicide

A 38-year-old man is facing a manslaughter charge in a case from 2018.

On June 23, 2018, an altercation occurred around 11 a.m. on West Hastings Street near the intersection with Abbott Street, according ot the VPD. During the altercation, Abeal Negussie Abera was stabbed.

He died a week later due to his injuries.

At the time, the VPD stated they did not believe it was a random attack and there was no risk to the general public. No arrests were made immediately.

On March 26, 2024, police announced Benny Rae Armstrong (now 38) was arrested on March 22, 2024 in connection to the stabbing. He remains in custody and faces one charge of manslaughter.

Armstrong has been convicted in the past of mischief, theft and robbery in B.C. He currently faces unrelated assault charges tied to a Dec. 30, 2023 incident, according to court records.
