The Canadian Coast Guard has suspended its search and rescue operation for a man who went overboard from a freighter anchored off English Bay Friday morning, a spokesperson for the coast guard has confirmed.

Emergency calls about a man overboard from the Hong Kong-registered freighter Pilatus Venture came in at about 9:15 a.m. yesterday.

The Coast Guard hovercraft Moytel, as well as the Coast Guard vessel Laredo Sound and smaller fast-response boats, including the North Vancouver Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue boat, searched Burrard Inlet near Lions Gate Bridge for signs of the missing man, said Michelle Imbeau, spokesperson for the Canadian Coast Guard.

The Pilatus Venture was at an anchorage near Stanley Park when the man went overboard.

“A search of the area was conducted all day for the individual who fell overboard a commercial vessel on Friday morning. Every reasonable effort has been expended and all leads have been exhausted,” stated Imbeau, in an emailed response.

The incident, which has now been handed over to the RCMP and Vancouver Police Department, is now considered a missing persons case, according to Imbeau.
