Fraser Health has declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Burnaby’s biggest child-care centre.

The outbreak has been declared at SFU Childcare Society on Burnaby Mountain after 24 COVID-19-positive cases were identified among staff and children.

SFU Childcare Society serves children up to and including five years of age and has one before-and-after school program, said Fraser Health.

“The outbreak is affecting five of the daycare’s classes,” said a Fraser Health news release. “The remainder of classes are unaffected and are able to continue operating. Fraser Health is reviewing infection control measures while the daycare is in operation for classes unaffected by the outbreak.”

In a childcare environment, if a staff member or child receives a confirmed positive COVID-19 test result, Fraser Health Public Health follows this protocol:

  • Contact tracing is initiated to determine how the individual was infected and who they were in close contact with in order to advise for self-monitoring or isolation.
  • Public Health staff works closely with the childcare provider throughout the case and contact management process to maintain close communication with the childcare community.

Fraser Health also declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Timothy Christian School in Chilliwack on February 13, 2021, after 35 COVID-19-positive cases were identified among staff and students.

"It is critically important for people living in the Fraser Health region to use the COVID-19 assessment tool and get tested as soon as you have COVID-19-like symptoms, even mild ones,” said Fraser Health. “Please don’t wait, and book or drop by one of our collection centres which are operated in partnership with local Divisions of Family Practice. People living in the Fraser Health region can find information about test collection centres by visiting Fraser Health’s website.”
