Craving tacos? (Let's be honest, is there ever a time we're not craving tacos?
Fortunately for us New Westies, we have some excellent options nearby when those must-have-tacos-now moments come upon us. We've rounded up five favourites, in five different neighbourhoods, to help guide you to your next destination.
The Taco Factory
418 East Columbia St. (Sapperton)
You can’t go wrong with Sapperton’s favourite Mexican hangout, where you can choose from an array of scrumptious options including steak, chicken (grilled or slow roasted), pork (marinated or pulled), lamb, chorizo, fish and veggie. Or don’t decide, and just get their Taco Roulette — with 20 mixed tacos, plus guacamole, chips and salsa.
Plus, the menu has an array of other options for everyone — even the pickiest kid eater in the house.
Winner winner taco dinner.
El Santo
680 Columbia St. (downtown)
When you want to take your noshing up a notch, this is the destination for you. Start yourself off with the trio of salsas before diving in to a menu that features contemporary twists on Mexican flavours. Never fear, Los Tacos still figure strongly on the menu — with beer-battered B.C. ling cod, chipotle-braised Fraser Valley chicken and some unique vegetarian options (including fried cauliflower and fried brussel sprouts) among your choices.
And did we mention the cocktails? And the churros?
Taqueria Playa Tropical
334 Sixth St. (uptown)
This uptown gathering spot is always busy — and for good reason. There’s a head-spinning array of tacos to choose from for carnivores and vegetarians alike: beef, steak, pork, chicken, chorizo, fish, shrimp, refried beans and even champiñones, featuring mushrooms.
The menu is packed with other faves, including kids’ taco and quesadilla options.
Don’t forget to buy the Mexican candy on your way out.
Pamola Bakery & Deli
River Market (Quayside)
Tacos, tostadas and tamales are on the menu at this delightful little spot at River Market, where you can enjoy authentic Mexican options at the shop named for a tiny town in Mexico. Yes, we’re talking about tacos, but the bonus here is obviously the bakery counter. If you happen to find yourself ordering a cupcake, cookie or slice of pie to go along with your lunch, we won’t judge.
Also, three words: Mexican hot chocolate.
Ole Ole Mexican Deli
831 12th St. (West End)
If you’re craving warm, home-cooked classic Mexican favourites served in cheerful surroundings, then this is the destination for you. You won’t find them touting the latest trendy offering on Instagram, but you’ll find personal service and good value for money with the fiesta of flavours you’ve come to expect.
