Did Vancouverites move to Threads?

Are you on Threads?

Threads was launched by Meta, the company behind Instagram and Facebook, on July 5.

While social media is used by about 86 per cent of Canada's population, not everyone uses everything, and the biggest companies compete for the largest userbase in the country.

With billions of users across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp their parent company Meta is the biggest in the world. To add to that, the company launched Threads, an app similar to Twitter, on July 5.

Lots of buzz meant millions joined quickly, but did that turn into regular use?

Globally, it doesn't appear so, with plummeting numbers after its initial release.

But some communities find their niche on different apps, so did Vancouverites buck the trend and start using Threads?

Also no, it appears.

Vancouver Is Awesome polled 930 readers and asked the question: Are you using Threads (from Meta)?

Locals and people from outside Vancouver seem to agree, Threads is not for them. It seems around 10 or 11 per cent of people are using the new platform, with just under 90 per cent passing on the new product.

The poll ran from 7/13/2023 to 7/18/2023. Of the 930 votes, we can determine that 457 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:

Yes 11.16 % local, 10.32 % total
No 88.84 % local, 89.68 % total
  Local   Total

Results are based on an online study of adult Vancouver Is Awesome readers that are located in Vancouver. The margin of error - which measures sample variability - is +/- 3.21%, 19 times out of 20.
