Vancouver park board asks locals for help shaping new, huge waterfront park

Do the people of Vancouver want a giant statue of Chewbacca? A quidditch field? A real creek connected to False Creek? All of the above?

Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is asking Vancouverites to help shape the new East Park via an online survey between Nov. 16 to Dec. 8, 2022.

A new Vancouver waterfront park is currently in the works and the city is asking residents how it should look.

East Park will revitalize the False Creek waterfront between Science World and Creekside Community Centre, according to the parks board, with 1.2 hectares of parkland. Right now the area includes the seawall, a parking lot, and public land.

The current name is not the official name of the park and a separate park naming process will determine an official name for the project.

The False Creek waterfront has seen other projects over the years, from Vancouver's biggest playground to a massive park (just across from the proposed new park).

The existing infrastructure where the park has been proposed is aging out, and the city sees it as an opportunity to re-envision the area.

Now the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is looking to Vancouverites to help shape the park, asking locals to share "comments, stories, and hopes for the area" in a survey from Nov. 18 to Dec. 8, states a news release.

The park will be built in the Olympic Village neighbourhood and emerging Railyard neighbourhood, serving as a waterfront destination and community amenity.

"The project design and development will be guided by the Northeast False Creek parks guiding principles and will reflect xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) cultures and values to nurture a place of belonging and connection to nature," reads the park board news release.
