According to a statement issued by YVR yesterday, flights to Mexico's Mazatlán International Airport are experiencing delays and cancellations due to ongoing civil unrest.

The Canadian government's latest travel advisory warns travellers to Mexico to exercise a "high degree of caution."

"There is widespread violence and security operations in Sinaloa State, particularly in Culiacán, Mazatlan, Los Mochis and Guasave since the arrest, on January 5, 2023, of a cartel leader," reads the advisory.

"There are burning cars, exchanges of fire and threat to essential infrastructure, including airports."

The route is served by WestJet and Sunwing.

WestJet has announced flexible and cancel guidelines for those travelling to the region. Sunwing is in the process of scheduling recovery flights, as well as providing accommodation, food and transfers, for affected customers who are currently in the region.

Those in Sinaloa are advised to remain in shelter, avoid areas where large demonstrations and gatherings are taking place, monitor local media for information on the evolving situation, follow travel advisories and instructions of local authorities and check the latest flight information with their airlines.
