A government-run cannabis store has been approved for the Scottsdale Centre shopping mall in Delta.

Council on Monday voted in favour of a rezoning application by the B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch to open a dispensary that will be located in very close proximity to a government-run liquor store in the mall.

Only Coun. Lois Jackson voted in opposition, saying the majority of public feedback was in opposition and that she is also concerned about a plethora of applications in Delta.

A Delta staff report noted the proposed store meets or exceeds other municipalities’ minimum-distance-away requirements, and the Delta School District has already said the location is a “fairly large distance” away from their nearest school.

The government’s North Delta cannabis dispensary will have access from the interior of the shopping centre only and it would not be visible from the exterior of the building aside from a sign that would be visible at the mall entrance.

The Community Planning and Development Department and Delta Police reviewed the proposal and do not anticipate any impacts to the community, the report notes.

Since legalization, the province has opened 26 of its own cannabis retail stores and is actively working to open more stores.
