A new pilot program will allow Vancouverites to drink alcohol at a popular artisan and food market.

Granville Island launched its Open Alcohol Consumption Pilot program Friday, (June 9), which will run until December.

The pilot follows similar open alcohol consumption initiatives across Metro Vancouver, including the City of Vancouver's recently approved year-round public drinking plazas.

The trial will allow open and responsible liquor consumption in the Public Market and adjoining Courtyard between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. from June to October and between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. in November and December.

For those unsure of the boundaries, anywhere inside the Public Market and between two signs with information on the program in the Courtyard are designated spaces for sipping booze.

Although the market closes at 6 p.m. every day, people can still bring and drink their own spirits in the Courtyard within the designated hours.

Those who choose to drink must be at least 19 years old in accordance with the law and may be subject to age checks.

Additionally, folks are asked to be conscious and respectful towards others, and to drink responsibly (including not drinking and driving). Anyone who is visibly intoxicated, behaving inappropriately, or disturbing others will be asked to leave Granville Island and may face public intoxication penalties.

Security will also be present during consumption hours to ensure public safety and appropriate behaviour.

Granville Island will be reviewing the results of the trial at the end of the year on Dec. 31, 2023.
