An old grenade was among the items seized by Vancouver police from a Burnaby apartment highrise during a series of drug raids Monday.

The VPD conducted a number of coordinated takedowns Monday afternoon at residences in Vancouver and at a 10th storey apartment at 7376 Halifax Street, near Burnaby's Squint Lake Park.

The police agency was initially tight-lipped about the operation but has since told the NOW “a substantial amount of drugs, weapons and an explosive” were seized during the raids.

VPD media spokesperson Sgt. Aaron Roed said the grenade was removed and detonated at Squint Lake Park by VPD explosives technicians.

Police arrested two people when the search warrants were executed, Roed said.

He said one was held on an outstanding VPD warrant related to a different investigation while the other was released pending further investigation.

Roed said no more information about the operation was available at this time.

“The investigation is ongoing, and the evidence requires significant time and skill to process,” he said. “Charges are anticipated to be recommended once the seized drugs have undergone confirmatory analysis by Health Canada.”
