Here's where to seek refuge from the heat in New West this weekend

Cooling centres are operating at Century House and Queensborough Community Centre for those who need a place to escape the record-breaking temperatures

Looking for a way to beat the heat?

The City of New Westminster is setting up cooling centres in two community centres to help keep residents safe during this weekend's heat wave, as temperatures are predicted to reach 35 to 40C around the region.

Cooling centres will include water and chairs in an air-conditioned space, with city staff on hand to help out. If you or someone you know needs to take shelter from the soaring heat, you can stop by:

  • Century House: 620 Eighth St. It's slated to be open as needed starting today (Friday) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Queensborough Community Centre: 920 Ewen Ave. It's scheduled to be open Saturday and Sunday (June 26 and 27) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The city is also making sure its outdoor spaces are ready to keep you cool and refreshed:

Hours of operation through June 27, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Grimston Park Wading Pool
1900 Seventh Ave.
Hours of operation through June 27, 11:15 a.m. to 9 p.m.

SPRAY PARKS

Hours of operation 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., located at the following parks:

  • Hume Park – 660 East Columbia St.
  • Moody Park – 600 Eighth St.
  • Old Schoolhouse Park – 500 Ewen Ave.
  • Queen’s Park - 3rd Avenue
  • Ryall Park – Salter Street
  • Sapperton Park – 351 East Columbia St.
