Images: This is what the redeveloped $155 million Jewish Community Centre will look like

West 41 Avenue is getting to be a busy street

As the Oakridge area sees massive development at the mall site, a neighbour is moving forward with their own big-budget project.

The Jewish Community Centre is building a new facility at Oak Street and West 41 Avenue. The new eight-storey building is planned for land next to the current community centre where a parking lot currently sits between the centre and King David High School.

"Built in 1961, the facility is desperately in need of replacement," says the centre's management online.

The new centre will house new and expanded facilities, including a larger childcare area (with room for 104 children), an adult day centre for home-bound elderly, a 450-seat theatre and the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre. It'll be less than 200 metres from the new Oakridge development.

While the development permit process is still going on, the centre already has a second phase planned. Once the new Jewish Community Centre is built, the old centre will be demolished and two new rental towers standing around 25 storeys will be built. The $272 million project is expected to add up to 600 new rental units by 2028.
