Light spectacle: This free winter wonderland in Burnaby is hosting a festive evening this Saturday

Ring in the holiday season at this family-friendly Burnaby event.

Heritage Christmas will officially launch at Burnaby Village Museum this weekend.

Join the Bright in Burnaby event Saturday, Dec. 2 from 5 to 9 p.m., with a special tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m.

This year Heritage Christmas features “light” as a design element in the festivities, “as a way to bring to the fore the various holidays celebrated in winter, such as Chanukah, Diwali, Hobiyee, and others,” said a staff update.

Visitors can experience eco-sculptures, hanging lanterns, light tunnels, snowflakes and beautiful window displays around the 10-acre museum site.

Father Christmas will be there, as well as roving holiday characters.

Kids can participate in a “light” themed scavenger hunt throughout the whole run of the Heritage Christmas event.

Proceeds from the carousel rides during the Bright in Burnaby night will go to the Burnaby Christmas Bureau with developer Concord Pacific matching donations.

In 2021, ride sales totalled $1,083.60, according to a staff report. In 2019, ride sales totalled $2,260. Staff estimate the ride sales this year will be about $2,000.

The city’s contribution in 2022 supported the Burnaby Christmas Bureau in assisting more than 3,150 children, seniors, homeless and at-risk individuals, and families in need by providing them with toys, gifts, food, hampers and essential items, according to a letter from Antonia Beck, Burnaby Neighbourhood House CEO.

For Heritage Christmas opening hours, see the city’s event webpage.
