A man accused of sex trafficking and violently assaulting a 19-year-old woman in Edmonton was on the run for one year and four months before Burnaby RCMP caught up with him during the holiday season.

Keyshawn McMillan was wanted on Canada-wide warrants for charges including human trafficking, forcible confinement, aggravated assault, uttering threats and assault with a weapon, according to an Edmonton Police Service news release.

The charges relate to two alleged assaults on the same 19-year-old woman at two different Edmonton motels in 2021.

“Upon further investigation, detectives learned that McMillan forced the female into the sex trade and trafficked her,” stated the EPS release.

McMillan was supposed to appear in court on Aug. 17, 2021 in relation to the first assault, but he did not appear and was “actively evading police until his recent arrest,” according to Edmonton police.

That arrest took place last week.

On Boxing Day (Dec. 26), Burnaby RCMP got information a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant was reportedly staying in the 200 block of Gilmore Avenue in North Burnaby.

They arrested McMillan without incident the following afternoon, and he has since been turned over to police in Edmonton.

He remains in custody.

There had been a $50,000 reward offered for any information leading to McMillan’s arrest, but it expired on June 9, 2022 and was not awarded in the case, according to Edmonton police.
