A man has been charged with one count of assault for pushing a pregnant woman in Surrey's Whalley neighbourhood.

This investigation began on March 23, after a pregnant woman was pushed to the ground in what appears to be an unprovoked assault, explains a news release from the Surrey RCMP.

Before the assault, the victim visited a bank on 102 Avenue and King George Boulevard, shortly after 11:30 a.m. At that time, an unknown man approached her from behind and pushed her to the ground.

The victim was taken to an area hospital and "fortunately, received only minor physical injuries."

Suspect identified with help from the public

The Surrey RCMP General Investigation Unit (GIU) took control of the investigation, and with the assistance of the public, a suspect was identified. On April 10, the suspect was arrested in Langley with the assistance of the Langley RCMP.

Forty-nine-year-old Roger Evanson of no fixed address has been charged with one count of assault and was remanded to custody.

"Thank you to the media and the public for playing a big role in helping us advance this investigation," says Sergeant Elenore Sturko, Media Relations Officer for Surrey RCMP.

"Tips from the public not only helped us to identify the suspect but also helped to bring forward an additional witness."
