Update: Medical emergency ends in Burnaby crash that shuts down Hastings Street

Hastings Street was closed in both directions near Madison Avenue for hours Wednesday as police investigated a crash caused by a fatal medical emergency.

Hastings Street in Burnaby was closed in both directions for hours Wednesday as police investigated a medical emergency that sent a car crashing into a parked van.

First responders were called to Hastings Street near Madison Avenue in the Heights neighbourhood at about 7:55 a.m. for reports of a car crash, according to Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj.

At the scene, they found a Honda sedan that had slammed into the back of a parked van.

“It looks like the driver went into some sort of medical emergency,” Kalanj told the NOW.

Despite lifesaving attempts, the man died at the scene, according to Kalanj.

Hastings wasn't reopened until after 2 p.m.

Contrary to reports on social media, the street was not closed because of a shooting, according to Burnaby RCMP.
