The Vancouver Thunderbird Chorus is marking seven decades of harmony with A 70-ish Anniversary Concert on Saturday, June 11 at Massey Theatre.

Whether it’s all June-uary all the time or whether the summer sun returns this week, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a selection of offerings to keep you entertained all week long in New Westminster.

Vancouver Thunderbird Chorus at Massey Theatre

The Vancouver Thunderbird Chorus was supposed to celebrate its seven-decade mark two years ago, until a little thing called COVID-19 got in the way. Undaunted, the a cappella chorus returns in style with a 70-ish Anniversary Concert on June 11 at Massey Theatre. Walk through the past, present and future of barbershop harmony with the chorus and special guests: Lions Gate Chorus, Second Inversion quartet, and the world champion Ringmasters quartet from Sweden.

New West Craft Indigenous Market

New West Craft is partnering with Shop First Nations to host an Indigenous market on the boardwalk at Westminster Quay on the traditional territories of the Qayqayt First Nation. The New West Craft Indigenous Market aims to bolster First Nations, Inuit and Métis artists and small businesses by encouraging consumers to invest in Indigenous made art, goods and services. It will feature 25 vendors and live performances from storyteller Kung Jaadee and musicians Norine Braun and Francis Batiste.

Eighth & Eight artist residencies

Experience the work of the artists who’ve been part of the performing arts collaborative residencies at the Eighth & Eight arts space (Massey Theatre complex).

Check out Live Wires, featuring contemporary choreography and movement by Rachel Helten, multi-instrumental original music from Devon More and projection media from digital artist Ezequiel Peralta. It’s on Thursday, June 9 and Friday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m.

This week, you can also see Art Cube, a performance art installation involving film, photography, video feedback, music and dance by filmmaker and digital media artist Yunuen Perez Vertti, photographer Grant Withers and dancer Silene Razo. It’s on Sunday, June 12 and Monday, June 13 at 7:30 p.m.

Coming up on Thursday, June 23 and Saturday, June 25 at 7:30 p.m., you can see Bending, including original music and arrangements with tap dancer Alexandra Clancy and double bassist Noah Gotfrit.

NWSS spring dance shows

New Westminster Secondary School’s dance students offer up their spring show at Massey Theatre on Tuesday, June 14 at 6:30 p.m. The senior dancers present Lost in the Jungle, their interpretation of the Jumanji movies, while the junior dancers offer up A Night At the Museum.

Kill the Ripper at Anvil Theatre

This darkly comic, female-led take on the Jack the Ripper story is coming to the Anvil Theatre stage June 16 through 19. Follow the lives of three working women — Kit (Jackie Hanlin), Pudding (Katrina Tietz) and Viola (Nathania Bernabe) — as they decide they must teach, arm and protect themselves when men in power refuse to take them seriously.
