New Westminster has extended the hours at its two cooling centres

Need to stay cool today? City spray parks are waiting for you. Four-year-old Sawyer Brennan enjoyed Ryall Park's splash pad on Saturday.

If you have an outing or activity planned for today, you might want to check to make sure it's not closed or cancelled due to heat.

Word of cancellations and closures has been trickling in over the past hour or two, as the steadily rising temperatures bring New Westminster ever closer to the forecast high of 43C.

In response to the extreme heat, the city has extended the hours at its two cooling centres, where you can sit down and relax in air conditioned space. Water is available, and staff will be on hand to help out.

Century House (620 Eighth St., Moody Park) and Queensborough Community Centre (920 Ewen Ave.) are both open until 8 p.m. (Note the Queensborough centre is pet-friendly.)

If you're planning on going anywhere else, though? Check first.

Among the closures so far:

  • Schools: All School District 40 schools are closed today. An announcement regarding tomorrow is expected this afternoon.
  • Centennial Community Centre: The community centre has closed as of noon, and all programs and services have been cancelled. The city will be contacting participants.
  • Q to Q Ferry: Q to Q Ferry service has been suspended for this afternoon and will restart again tomorrow (Tuesday, June 29).
  • Businesses: Some restaurants and other businesses have indicated they're closing in the face of the heat wave today. If you plan to shop or eat out, call ahead just to be safe.

And, whatever you do today, stay cool. The City of New Westminster has helpfully compiled this list of ideas for staying safe in the heat.
