After a short foot pursuit, New West police officers apprehended a suspect who had allegedly exposed himself.

A man who was charged with sexual assault in December has now been charged with committing indecent acts.

Shortly before 4 p.m. on Monday, March 15, the New Westminster Police Department responded to calls of male allegedly exposing himself in the area of First Street and St. Patrick Street.

A NWPD press release states officers responded and obtained a description of the male, and took a suspect into custody – after a short foot pursuit – within the hour.

The police department’s investigation also determined the male had allegedly exposed himself to another female in the area of Fourth Street and Fourth Avenue.

Eugene Sung, a 39-year-old New Westminster resident, has now been charged with three counts of committing an indecent act. He’s also been charged with two counts of failing to comply with a release order.

According to NWPD, the suspect was charged on Dec. 4, 2020 with two counts of sexual assault in relation to an alleged groping incident in the 200 block of Seventh Street.

“These types of crimes can be largely underreported,” NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar said in a news release. “These women absolutely did the right thing in calling 9-1-1, and because of their quick thinking and being able to provide an accurate description of the suspect, our officers were able to locate the male and arrest him quickly.”

The victims have been connected with the Victim Assistance Unit for support. The male has since been released, but is now subject to house arrest except under limited exceptions.
