Witnesses helped New West police nab a man suspected of breaking into vehicles.

The New Westminster Police Department reports receiving two calls about 2:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 22 about suspicious activities in the downtown. One witness described someone breaking into a vehicle near 800 Carnarvon St.

When police arrived, a witness helped police officers by pointing them in the direction of the suspect. The suspect fled the scene, but the 40-year-old Vancouver resident was arrested and taken into custody, said a NWPD press release.

“We owe a big thanks to the people who called 911,” NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar said in a news release. “If you ever are witnessing what you believe to be a crime in progress, calling 911 allows our officers to arrive on scene fast. In this case, we were able to identify and arrest a suspect.”

The New Westminster Police Department is recommending charges of theft under $5,000 to Crown counsel.
