Coquitlam is throwing a grand-opening party this week to celebrate the renovation of a new $4-million community plaza.

Upgrades to Buchanan Square were completed in the spring after a year's worth of delays by global supply chain issues — primarily steel.

On Friday (Sept. 9), the city is hosting a free two-hour event to cut the ribbon on the public plaza, and will include coffee, tea and donuts from Spirit Bear, Stephen's Coffee and Gordo's Concessions.

A nine-hole mini-golf course will also be set up, as well as a video booth that creates personalized GIFs and live music from Bradley Barkman and Cassandra Maze

Buchanan Square is located on Burlington Drive outside of city hall (3000 Guildford Way) and next to the RCMP's main detachment.

New features consist of a slide, ping pong tables, swinging benches and lighting on an overhead metal grid, as well as a community welcome sign that features multiple languages, such as braille and hən̓q̓əmin̓em — the language of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) First Nation.

"The opportunity to improve the public space in Buchanan Square stemmed from a need to replace the roof of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Public Safety Building’s underground parkade, located beneath the square’s lower level," Coquitlam spokesperson Jody Addah said in a statement.

"While this important infrastructure work on the parkade membrane was taking place, Buchanan Square was transformed into space to allow for social connection, recreation and events."

The grand opening party is scheduled for Friday from 5 to 7 p.m.
