Photos: Diversity delivers an abundance of love, spirit at Coquitlam carnival

World of Love saw thousands of local residents brave the changing weather conditions to learn and try something new over the Labour Day long weekend.

After two years of waiting, organizers are reeling in the success of a new festival in Coquitlam.

On Sunday and Monday (Sept. 5), the World of Love Multicultural Carnival shone many bright colours around Town Centre Park in celebrating the diversity of the Tri-Cities and Metro Vancouver regions.

Tens of thousands of visitors were treated to something new from another culture, including food, dance, music and activities for all ages.

Though it experienced some heavy rain on day one, taking the stage was a relief for Joanna Wu, who spearheaded the campaign to host the carnival by way of the North America Chinese Culture Promotion Society.

"As the theme of this event shows, all performers and visitors turned up in pursuit of World of Love and with respect for multicultural diversity which represent the nature of Canada’s multiculturalism," the organization said in a statement to the Tri-City News.

Performances on the TD Community Plaza stage included music and dance from groups representing Argentina, China, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Peru, Scotland and Vietnam.

As well, several intricate lantern displays were set up along the paths near Lafarge Lake.

Dignitaries in attendance for the first-ever World of Love Multicultural Carnival included Coquitlam–Burke Mountain MLA Fin Donnelly, Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart, multiple city council members and B.C. Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training Anne Kang.
