Canucks fans in North Delta are being warned by police after nearly 1,000 fans gathered near Scott Road and 72 Avenue following the Vancouver team’s Aug. 21 win.
An increased police presence is expected in the area Friday night after the team faces off against Las Vegas Golden Knights for their seventh NHL playoff series match.
“We have seen people gather in that general area when the Canucks win,” a civilian spokesperson for the Delta Police, Cris Leykauf, explained to Vancouver Is Awesome.
The Surrey-Delta border has long been a hotspot for post-game celebrations, but the ongoing pandemic is presenting police with a new enforcement challenge – curbing novel coronavirus spread.
“Our enforcement efforts will be focused on public safety,” Leykauf said, which means ensuring both pedestrians and motorists at the intersection “get home safe.”
Police are strongly encouraging Canucks fans to stay home tonight. “If you do go out please wear personal protective equipment (PPE),” said Leykauf, such as face coverings or masks.
“And take proper precautions including remaining six feet from others,” she added.
Law enforcement in B.C. is able to ticket COVID-19 rulebreakers – including individuals who gather in groups of more than 50 people – with fines of $200.

Establishments as organizers hosting such a gathering can be ticketed a more substantial amount by police, $2,000.
“Though we’re emphasizing education over enforcement,” said Leykauf.
Residents concerned about COVID-19 violations are asked to contact Delta bylaw officers at 604-946-4141 or call the non-emergency line at 604-946-4411.
