With many calling for Canadians to support the Edmonton Oilers during the Stanley Cup finals, V.I.A. ran a poll to see what readers thought of cheering for one of the Canucks' regular rivals.
It's been more than 30 years since a Canadian team brought home Lord Stanley's Cup; in 1993 the Montreal Canadiens beat the LA Kings.
Since then a few teams have come close; famously, the Canucks made it to Game 7 of the finals twice, in 1994 and 2011. This is the Oilers' third trip to the finals since 1993, and the Calgary Flames, Ottawa Senators, and Canadiens have each made it to the finals.
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets haven't made an appearance in the last 30 years. The Leafs haven't made it to the Finals since 1967.
Given ice hockey is big in Canada, many want to see the Stanley Cup won by a Canadian team as soon as possible, but local fans aren't always excited to see their rivals thrive. For example, after a strong season last year, the Canucks made it to the second round of the playoffs, where they lost to the Oilers in seven games.
So V.I.A. polled readers to find out if they were cheering for Edmonton, Florida, or not at all.
The clear winner is the Oilers, but it's less than two-thirds of locals. In second place, with about 30 per cent of locals, is apathy (essentially). A lot of people aren't that interested in the two teams participating or the sport since there's no local team.
