Products that pose 'serious health risks' seized from Burnaby beauty store

Health Canada says it's not the first time 'unauthorized' products have been seized from Tokyo Beauty's owner

Health Canada has seized a number of products containing prescription drugs from a Metrotown mall beauty store.

Health officials have seized health products, including acne gel, an antibiotic cream, eye drops and eyewashes, from a Burnaby beauty shop because they contain unauthorized drugs and may pose serious health risks, according to Health Canada.

The department issued a safety alert Wednesday saying Tokyo Beauty, located in the Metropolis at Metrotown mall, had been selling products containing prescription drugs.

“Prescription drugs should only be taken under the advice and supervision of a health care professional because of the risk of interactions with other medications and side effects,” states the notice. “Prescription drugs can only be legally sold with a prescription.”

Health Canada said all of the products it seized were packaged and labelled in Japanese characters.

“As a result, information about ingredients, usage, dosage and side effects may not be understood by all consumers,” the notice stated.

Health Canada said it has seized unauthorized products from a Richmond Tokyo Beauty story with the same owner before and issued two advisories, the most recent in March of this year.

“The department will continue to take action to stop this illegal activity and update Canadians as needed," stated the notice.

Health Canada is urging customers who bought the products to stop using them and to consult a health care professional if they have used any of the products and are experiencing health concerns.
