Proposed townhouse project design irks Delta council

There’s no way they would approve a project that looks like that.

That’s what Delta council agreed at its Dec. 7th meeting during discussion on a new application to build a townhouse project in North Delta, saying the proposed form and character should fit in with the rest of the community.

Yet to go out for public consultation, a numbered company wants to consolidate seven, single-family lots bounded by 83rd Avenue, 115th Street and 83A Avenue to construct 35, three-storey townhouse units in eight buildings.

Adjacent to North Delta Secondary, the site would be accessed from two driveways on 115th Street.

The current designation for the area is for single-family, duplex, townhouse, rowhouses and other forms of low-rise multiple-family residential.

Saying the proposed form and character is not at all attractive, Coun. Lois Jackson complained more should be expected from the development community.

Housing must be more than places where people sleep but also aesthetically pleasing, she said.

Coun. Dan Copeland agreed, saying he’s adamantly opposed to the design.

Wondering if Delta should have standards when it comes to design, Coun. Jeannie Kanakos said the new advisory design panel, which will be appointed in late January, will need to look at proposed housing designs as soon as possible in the application process.  

Saying the form and character does not meet the standards of Delta, Mayor George Harvie recommended a workshop be held with the applicant before the application proceeds, which council approved.
